What Our Own ODD Numbers Say, and Why We Are Not Chasing Every Query

We ran our own Operator Demand Diagnostic against jollyfirst.com in the first days of the Alberta launch. Here is what it found, unfiltered.

We run this desk on a stated principle: a methodology is only worth publishing if it is applied consistently, including to whoever is publishing it. So we ran ODD, the same Operator Demand Diagnostic we offer operators, against our own site, and here is the unfiltered result from its first days live.

Over the most recent measurement window, jollyfirst.com registered 6,750 impressions across 319 distinct queries in the Alberta gambling and sports betting category. It received zero clicks. That is not a typo. Zero clicks against 6,750 impressions is a 0.0% demand capture rate.

Why the number is what it is

The reason is straightforward and not particularly flattering: median ranking position across the top queries in that set exceeds position 46. At that depth, click-through is close to zero regardless of content quality, a pattern well established in search behaviour generally, not specific to this site. Category queries like "alberta sportsbooks" and "alberta online sports betting" appear in the impression set at positions 65 and 82 respectively. Both are, functionally, invisible to anyone actually choosing where to play.

The one query worth acting on

One query in the set sat meaningfully closer to a threshold where clicks start to happen: an informational query about Alberta's minimum gambling age, ranking at position 23. Everything else in the dataset sat far enough back that no realistic amount of on-page editing would move it into click range this month.

So that is what we acted on: one page, rewritten specifically for that one query, with a direct-answer opening line, expanded content depth, and a citation to AGLC's own published standards. Every other query in the dataset was left alone, deliberately, because editing content that is 60+ positions from relevance does not change the outcome, and pretending otherwise would be the same move we criticise elsewhere: reporting an activity metric and implying it caused a result it did not cause.

What this means for the rest of the dataset

The honest position is that most of this dataset will not move without the kind of domain authority that takes months to build, not one editing pass. That is a slower answer than most search marketing content gives, and it is the accurate one.

This is the same diagnostic state ODD would surface for an operator: exactly where demand exists, exactly where it is being captured or not, and which of the two problems is actually worth solving first. Operators curious what their own numbers look like can see a sample report at /for-operators/odd-demo/.

We will report back on the one query we did act on once there is enough data to say something real about it, not before.
